47th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions fetch RMB 105 million

The 47th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions concluded at the Beijing International Hotel in Beijing on Sept 26, raising a total of 105 million yuan in sales.

 

More than 4,000 items, including Chinese paintings and calligraphy, porcelain and works of art, were presented at the auctions.

Chinese painting and calligraphy

 

Nearly 1,600 Chinese paintings and calligraphy works were presented during the Chinese painting and calligraphy section, covering modern, contemporary and ancient works.

 

Zhang Daqian’s landscape painting, Wanshantu, sold for 13.22 million yuan, which set the record for the highest transaction price in China Guardian’s quarterly auctions.

Works from other famous painters also fetched good prices, like Huang Zhou’s Girl and Sheep, which sold for 2.18 million yuan and Lu Yanshao’s landscape painting, Mountain and Pavilion, which sold for 1.61 million yuan.

Other works sold for unexpected prices during the auctions. For example, Tian Shiguang’s traditional bird-and-flower painting, Bird, Plum and Bamboo, sold for 253,000 yuan, much higher than the estimated price of 3,000 yuan.

At this quarterly auction, China Guardian especially presented some painter’s works at the Contemporary Ink Chinese Painting and Calligraphy session. Among them, Peng Xiancheng’s character and landscape painting, Sightseeing in Spring, sold for 391,000 yuan.

Classical Chinese paintings have always been very popular among collectors. Some works were sold for unexpected prices during the auctions. For example, Zheng Xie’s Bamboo and Rock sold for 517,500 yuan, much higher than the estimated price of 6,000 yuan.

Porcelain and Works of Art

 

More than 1,800 items were presented in four special sessions: Porcelain, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, For the Enjoyment of Scholars and Jade and Works of Art.

 

The Porcelain session selected chinaware from royal kilns and famous folk kilns from past dynasties. Porcelain from the Qing Dynasty’s royal kiln is especially favored by collectors.

 

An under-glazed red bowl with flower patterns from the reign of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty sold for 483,000 yuan.

In recent years, as the tastes of collectors improve, the prices of scholar-related items have increased tremendously. An ink stone made from natural rock dating to the early Qing Dynasty was sold for 253,000 yuan.

The figure of Buddha was also popular among collectors. A gilded bronze figure of Amitabha Buddha from the Ming Dynasty sold for 690,000 yuan.

Furniture

 

This section highlighted Chinese classical furniture and many items achieved good prices. For example, a Ming Dynasty screen with a drawing of colored figures sold for 94,300 yuan.

Rare books and manuscripts

 

The 47th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions presented 660 pieces in this category, with a total sales volume of 4.46 million yuan. The most important item of this session, Shen Zengzhi’s letters, sold for 230,000 yuan, higher than its estimated price of 5,000 yuan.
