China Guardian in 2007: A Total Transaction of USD 239.45 Million

In a recently released statement, China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd. disclosed that it continued to head the list of auction enterprises steadfast in the Chinese mainland in 2007 with a total volume of transaction topping USD 239.45 Million. The Company held 60 special auctions including those of Chinese calligraphy and painting, porcelain artifacts, oil paintings and sculpture, contemporary art, audio-visual art, ancient rare books, stamps, coins and bronze mirrors. The number of objects put on auction exceeded 23,000, of which over 18,000 were sold , hitting an average transaction rate at 78%.

"We are pleased that in the year 2007 we had a satisfactory result in our auctions. In 2008, which will be our 15th anniversary, we shall, as ever, persist in providing first class services to our customers and continue to contribute our share to the inheritance and protection of Chinese cultural and art heritage together with the collectors and artifact lovers," says Ms. Wang Yannan, Director and President of China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd.

The 2007 Spring Auction had 15 special sessions with over 5,600 objects put on auction, getting over USD 83.01 million in total volume of transaction. The Autumn Auction of the year had a record breaking of 19 sessions and got over USD 95.62 million in total volume of transaction, a nearly 56% over that of the previous year. It is also the highest sale in China Guaridan's Autumn Auctions in the history. Besides, there some special sale sessions scored 100% sale rate, which include Fu Baoshi and Zhang Daqian collected by the Study of Calm Vision in the 2007 Spring Auction and the Northerner Qi Baishi and Southerner Zhang Daqian, as well as the Ming and Qing Calligraphy and Painting Masterpieces collected by the Danqingzhuyan in the Autumn Auctions.

As a unique form of auction created by China Guardian, the China Guardian Quarterly Auctions continued to grow steadily in 2007. It topped all similar auctions in quality, scale and volume. Four sessions of China Guardian Quarterly Auctions were held with a total volume of USD 58.36 million, an increase of 57% over the previous year. Among them, Li Keran's The Blood-red Setting Sun over the Green Mountain sold at USD 467,000 and a well-preserved mid-Qing gilded bronze statue of General Guan Yu sold at USD 353,000 after keenly contested bidding. The auction of ancient rare books premiered in China Guardian Quarterly Auctions was also very successful. Two auctions combined to make USD 2.74 million, hitting 80.9% sale rate.


A Number of of World Records by China Guardian in 2007

In China Guardian Autumn Auction 2007, listed three world records: (1) Ming-dynasty national level treasure Painting of the Red Cliff by Qiu Ying was auctioned at USD 10.89 million, not only creating the world record price of Chinese painting of any form, but also marked that the price of a single Chinese painting upgraded to the level of over USD10 million. (2) A set of Ink Stick with 10-scenes from the West Lake manufactured under the edict of Qing Emperor Qianlong was auctioned at USD 614,000, creating a world record price for Chinese ancient tools of the study. (3) A fifty-tael silver ingot made by the Silver Coinage Bureau in the sixth year of Ming Yongle Reign Year was auctioned at USD 215,000, a world record price for silver ingot auction.

The Stamp, Coin and Bronze Mirror show of China Guardian Spring Auction 2007 broke a set of world records. A One Chinese Dollar silver coin of the 18th year of the Republic of China (1912–1949) with the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen against the background of padded rice in gold was auctioned at USD 844,000, a world record of Chinese coin ever sold. A Shaanxi banknote issued in 1911, the last reign year of Qing Xuantong Emperor with the denomination of ten taels was auctioned at USD 95,000, a world record price for single Chinese banknote auction. A Jin Dynasty Tianjuan coin was auctioned at USD 184,000, a world record price for Chinese ancient coin auction in China Guardian auction history.


Apart from the auction of works that created record prices, China Guardian auction of other masterpieces was also very successful. Chen Yifei's gigantic work Ode to the Yellow River that made him famous, was auctioned for USD 5.52 million, at China Guardian spring auction 2007, setting the highest price for his own oil painting and also for oil paintings by others in the Chinese mainland. Jin Shangyi's Kuncan As a Painter was transacted at over USD 2.19 million, breaking the price record of his own works. Both the Qing Yongzheng Reign Period colored incense burner in green backdrop pierced work (auctioned at USD 3.62 million) and the Late-Ming Volume I of the Three-volume Unofficial Record Xiangshan sculptured by Mao's Study (USD 629,000) registered good auction prices in their respective categories


Consignment from Boston Museum of Fine Art, Landmark in China Auction business

As a milestone in China's artifact auction market, China Guardian auctioned the porcelain and Chinese ancient books consigned by Boston Museum of Fine Art, the first time a in the Chinese auction history.

A total of 39 pieces of early Qing Dynasty porcelain wroks and 285 copies of rare books were sold out at 100% sale rate with a total of volume of over USD 1.37 million.
