June 5, 2006- The 12 sales of China Guardian’s 2006 Spring Auction brought in thriving results, with an overall total of 535 million RMB and the establishment of many new auction records.

Authorities pointed out that this auction was met with enthusiastic but sensible participation; while bidding was competitive, buyers still stuck to their standards. This is a favorable sign in the auction world, and increased the trust of experts from both near and far. The “Guardian Weathervane” again affirmed the positive direction of the market.

Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy sales took in 228 million RMB, including the 87.4 million RMB gathered by the Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale, which sold at 79.3% by lots and included two pieces that fetched over 10 million RMB.

“The Lotus Society,” a hand scroll by Shi Tao, drew the most expensive bidding, selling at 11.77 million RMB. It just barely eclipsed a hand scroll by Zhao Zuo, “Boundless Streams and Mountains,” that took 11 million RMB and is very likely the best of his works to ever come up for auction. A rare work indeed, it reached a record auction price for works by Zhao Zuo.

The Modern and Contemporary Paintings and Calligraphy sale made 112 million RMB with buyers still quite focused on works by notable masters such as Qi Baishi, Huang Zhou, Li Keran, and Xu Beihong, etc.
Fine Contemporary Paintings brought 28.4 million RMB with a high sales rate of 93% by lots. Jia Youfu’s “Boundless Surges,” from his black landscape series of Taihang Mountain, and a very rare theme to be seen in the market, sold for 3.3 million RMB. “Tao Yuanming’s Drunk and Happy Old Men,” a massive painting by Wang Mingming, was equally as successful, selling for 3.3 million RMB. Part two of the “’93 (Ink) Fine Arts Critics Invitational Exhibition” collection, including twenty works, sold for 561,000 RMB.

The Oil Paintings and Sculptures sale brought a total of 122.6 million RMB, selling at 88% by lots. Meng Luding and Zhang Qun’s “In the New Era- Adam and Xiawa,” seen as the symbolic first painting of Contemporary Chinese art, sold for 6.27 million RMB. The art historical significance of “In the New Era- Adam and Xiawa,” has been reiterated numerous times by experts in the field and is considered well beyond the category of an object of fine art, having already passed into the higher value category of historical and cultural significance. It is a symbol of a special period in contemporary Chinese history, a sort of sutra for an era of significant cultural progress and transition, and communicates the feeling of enlightenment with the ideal spirits and concepts of the art world of that moment.

At the end of this auction analysts pointed out that from the atmosphere of the bidding and the choices that the buyers made, it is evident that the oil painting market has already begun to come into its mature phase. Buyers showed a rational style of bidding and showed that their knowledge and understanding of the works is growing deeper.

Porcelain, Works of Art, Jadeite and Diamond Jewelry sales came to 100.4 million RMB, with a “Qianlong Famille-Rose Eight Immortals Vase” selling at 52.8 million RMB, making it the highest price ever paid for porcelain at auction in China and demonstrating that China Guardian’s porcelain auctions are now firmly at the international level.

Another rare showpiece of Qing famille-rose porcelain, a “Daoguang Coral Ground Vase” with a striking and precise peony motif in strong color and rich arrangement, was sold at 7.92 million RMB. Diamonds, Jadeite and Jewelry sold 63 pieces for a total of 5 million RMB, making visible the noticeable upward trend in the rate of sales for this market. The road ahead for both collectors and investors looks promising. The highest sale was a “Jadeite Bangle.” It’s glistening texture, diaphanous qualities and bright tones brought bidding up to 1.21 million RMB. Diamond pieces also had the favor of jewelry enthusiasts, as evidenced by a pair of diamond ear studs that reached 407,000 RMB.

Sale of Arts from the Scholar’s Studio- the Jiansongge Collection totaled 35.9 million RMB for 116 pieces, including bamboo brush holders, rhinoceros horns, inkstones, lacquer wares, bronzes, zitan and huanghuali scholar’s objects, and selling at 84.5%.

Experts commented that in these past few years the conditions for successful sales of scholar’s objects at auction is becoming more and more ideal, especially as fine works of art and scholar’s objects are comparatively rare on the market. For collectors the sale of the Jiansongge Collection was a rare opportunity indeed, and, as expected, prices surpassed the reserve prices two to three times over.

The Rare Books sale totaled 7.3 million RMB with a sales rate of 57%. The longest ancient classical Chinese map known to date, the “Jinsha Quantu” sold for 2.8 million RMB, the highest ever achieved for a classical Chinese map.

“The Jinsha Quantu” is an overall map of the Jinsha River during the middle Qing dynasty, an engineering schema drawn up for a governmental dredging project. Not only is it full of natural southwestern scenery, but it also provides a rare glimpse of history, showing us what the pre-dredged river once looked like.

Stone Rubbings and Calligraphy gathered 1.66 million RMB with a rate of 54.6%.

Stamps and Covers sales brought 7.77 million RMB with a sales rate of 83.8%. The ‘king of Chinese stamps’, a “Three Cents Red Revenue Stamp Surcharged One Dollar” sold for 2.42 million RMB, a world record for its type. A “Whole Country Is Red” block of four un-issued stamps sold for 880,000 RMB.

The Ma Dingxiang Collection of Coins and Banknotes gathered a total of 26.99 million RMB at a rate of 81.4%. The sale included a “Commemorative Gold Coin of Admiral Zhang Zuolin” that sold for 3.19 million RMB, breaking the world record for Chinese coins. A “Sun Yat-sen One-Dollar Coin” with a laurel design and from the 18th year of the Republic sold for 1.43 million RMB, establishing a world record for Republican era manufactured silver coins.  A Xuantong 1909 coin with the central character Bian made 682,000 RMB and broke the world record for Chinese manufactured copper dollars.

The coins and banknotes market has already shown itself to be on a swiftly increasing trend, Particularly rare collector’s items are reaching ideal prices, an embodiment of this market’s worth. The increase in participation of so many new buyers is also a major reason for the rising coin and banknote market prices.

The Xizhai (Peaceful Scholar’s Studio) Collection of Bronze Mirrors totaled 4.9 million RMB at a 57.7% sales rate. Among the star sales were a “Warring States Three Mountains Mirror”, which sold for 330,000 RMB, and a “Tang Dynasty Square Mirror with Grapes and Beasts on the Waves Motif”, which also sold for 330,000 RMB. The latter is an example of the most delicate type of workmanship and is a gem among square mirrors of the same theme.
