China Guardian Spring Auction Concluded with RMB 5.3 Billion Yuan and Created A Record High of Artwork Market

China Guardian 2011 Spring Auction successfully concluded on May 25, 2011 in Beijing with a turnover of RMB 5.323 billion yuan, refreshing the record of Chinese artwork single season auction. What is more impressive is that the spring auction of Guardian historically created four world records:The Towering Pine and Cypress Painting with Four-Character-Line Couplet in Seal Script, the largest-sized work of Qi Baishi, created a new milestone of modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy with RMB 425.5 million yuan. Mountain, Earth and Wind, an important work of Chen Yifei, created a world record of Chinese oil painting auction with RMB 81.65 million yuan; Yuan Dynasty handwritten copy of Policies of the Eastern and Western Han Dynasties in Twelve Volumes set a world record of Chinese ancient books with RMB 48.3 million yuan; Mirror, Blossom, Water and Moon—Bronze Mirror with Auspicious Beasts and Inscriptions was sold at RMB 8.97 million yuan, establishing a world record of bronze mirror. At the spring auction, 3,142 items of Chinese painting and calligraphy, porcelain, furniture and works of art, Chinese oil paintings and sculptures, rare books and manuscripts, jewelry and jade, wrist watches and 3,796 items of stamp, coins and bronze mirrors were sold, among which two works were sold for over RMB 100 million yuan and 84 works for over RMB 10 million yuan each.

Ms. Wang Yannan, Director and President of China Guardian Auctions Co., Ltd. said: “The spring auction concluded with RMB 5.323 billion yuan, a record high of a single season since China Guardian was established in 1993 and also the highest record in the auction history of Chinese artworks. Meanwhile, four world records were created in succession at Guardian’s auction of which we are quite proud. I appreciate the great support from our collector friends. For the moment the performance of artwork market depends on economic growth. But with more attention from and participation of collectors, domestic artwork market will definitely become more prosperous.”

The turnover of modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy exceeded RMB 2.6 billion yuan and on average 93% of the works were sold with 37 works sold over RMB 10 million yuan. The Towering Pine and Cypress Painting with Four-Character-Line Couplet in Seal Script, the largest-sized work of Qi Baishi, created a new milestone of modern and contemporary painting and calligraphy with RMB 425.5 million yuan. Herding Horse Painting, a 26 square feet work by Huang Zhou was sold at RMB 60.375 million yuan, a record high of the painter’s works. In addition, Flower, Bird and Landscape after the Song Style by Xie Zhiliu and Calligraphy in Running Script by Hu Shi both created personal records respectively with RMB 46 million yuan and RMB 5.29 million yuan. Furthermore, all works were sold at the five sessions, namely “Zhongxing Hut Painting Collection”, the “Autumn Studio’s Collection”, the “Zhenru House’s Collection”, “Charming Landscape: Five Elaborate Paintings by Lu Yanshao from Private Collection in Singapore” and “Gazing at the Last Century: Painting and Calligraphy by Celebrated Politicians, Scholars and Artists”. This fully demonstrated our strength and indubitable leading position in this arena.

The turnover of classical painting and calligraphy was over RMB 700 million yuan. 18 works were sold over RMB 10 million yuan. Lotus Sutra by Qianlong Emperor, a piece listed in Shiqubaoji, topped the list with RMB 55.775 yuan. Calligraphy in Running Script by Zheng Xie refreshed the record of Zheng Banqiao’s works with RMB 43.7 million yuan. 11 works of Zhang Xueliang’s collection at “Young General’s Love with Ink—Zhang Family’s Collection” session were sold at RMB 128 million yuan among which Returning by Boat in Autumn by Gu Zhengyi was sold at RMB 35.075 million yuan. In calligraphy sector, Running Script in Poem by Wang Duo and Grass Style by Chen Chun were both sold at RMB 8.625 million yuan.

The turnover of porcelain, furniture and works of art was RMB 1.364 billion yuan, the best performance in this sector since China Guardian was established 18 years ago. 21 works were sold over RMB10 million yuan and 6 sessions concluded with more than RMB 100 million yuan. Two Huanghuali sessions concluded with RMB 288 million yuan. At the session of “Treasures from Imperial Daoguang Porcelain by Wutaishanren”, 58 items (sets) were all sold and the turnover was RMB 159 million yuan, presenting a great gift to the spring auction. At the “Fine Porcelain Collection by Dongbozhai” session, 24 items were sold at RMB 131 million yuan and left all the audience amazed. Very Rare and Extremely Fine Lacquer Qin Music Instrument of Tang Dynasty attracted great attention before auction and finally was sold at RMB 115 million yuan. The turnover of “Collection of Porcelain and Works of Art for Chinese Emperor” session was RMB 255 million yuan, showing again China Guardian’s leading position. Purple sand sessions performed quite well and the turnover of three new and old purple sand sessions exceeded RMB 140 million yuan.

The turnover of Chinese oil paintings and sculptures was RMB 258 million yuan. Mountain, Earth and Wind, a representative work of Chen Yifei, was sold at RMB 81.65 million yuan, a record high of the painter himself and also a world record of Chinese oil painting. Thus Chinese oil painting came to a higher position in the world platform. Stone Gate, the most important and largest sized work of Guan Liang was sold at RMB 23 million yuan, the record high of the painter himself. 98% of works at the Chinese sculpture session were sold at a highest rate over the years and the turnover exceeded RMB 10 million yuan.

The turnover of rare books and manuscripts exceeded RMB 78 million yuan which is a historical high. Yuan Dynasty Handwritten Copy of Policies of the Eastern and Western Han Dynasties in Twelve Volumes was sold at RMB 48.3 million yuan, a world record of Chinese ancient books. One volume of the Mahaparinirvana-sutra No. 8, Dunhuang Sutra of Tang Dynasty and National Cultural Grade 1 relics, was sold at RMB 2.875 million yuan.

The turnover of stamps, coins, silver sycees and bronze mirrors was RMB 232 million yuan in 2011 spring auction. Two bronze mirrors sold over RMB 8 million yuan were both sold at Guardian: Mirror, Blossom, Water and Moon—Bronze Mirror with Auspicious Beasts and Inscriptions was sold at RMB 8.97 million yuan, a new record of bronze mirrors and Octafoil Bronze Mirror with Immortals Riding on Phoenix was sold at RMB 8.74 million yuan. Besides, in the machine-made coins sector, Tai Ching Gold Coin, Year Ping-wu (1906) of Emperor Kuang Hsu, Pattern One Tael, Plain was sold at RMB 920, 000 yuan. In the Gold and Silver Sycees sector, Silver Sycee 50-Taels Yuan Dynasty stamped with“Xingguolu” was sold at RMB 3.105 million yuan. 60 paper notes of the first edition of RMB were sold out at RMB 4.14 million yuan. Among Chinese gold and silver coins, Millennium Commemorative Gold Coin issued by People’s Bank of China in 2000, the largest gold coin, was sold at RMB 7.705 million yuan. In the antique coins sector, “Western King Reward” ranked the top with RMB 2.3 million yuan. In the stamps sector, “A Group of Sets, All Blocks of 4 of Cultural Revolution” was sold at RMB 1.955 million yuan.
